PAUL POPE, I’M A FANBOY!

One of the best graphic designers and illustrators alive, also one of the greatest comic book artists. A master of brush and ink, a genius with shadows. He is a writer and artist with a strong commitment to creating personal work that is intimate and deeply felt. I discovered his stuff in “Buzz Buzz Comics Magazine”, a self-published folio sized rag on a discount rack at Alternate - it was a solid fistful of heavy rag paper and very exciting to find.

“Escapo” clinched it. I wish I could paint like this guy.

His book design and sense of graphic control were right there in 1996. His worlds and characters are cruddy, sexy and humorous, and have a sense of reality no matter how far-fetched they are. His ideas are always trippy and sometimes terrifying. He delivers these same qualities when working on commission for the most high profile “brand” properties. Check out his work and light up your life with amazing lines, dots, splashes and fireworks.

A WINDOW IN PRIPYAT

One year ago today, Matt Chuang and I arrived in Ukraine.  While shooting in Pripyat, we visited this stain glass window several times as the light changed.

A rare technique was used in its construction, the coloured glass cut edge facing out.  You can see this in the close up images.  The panels are very thick and mounted in heavy steel frames.  Some had been removed from the site.

It’s inside a large cafe/restaurant beside a lake, and apparently it’s the favourite place of returning evacuees who come for a day trip to see the town they were forced to leave.

Feb 2014 with Matt Chuang.

ON SPEC SPECTACULAR

In 2013 I was approached by a representative of the Fitzroy Street Business Association to create a style guide for the redevelopment of the Luna Park and Palais Theatre site, a large triangle of land bordered by The Upper Esplanade, Jacka Boulevard and Shakespeare Grove.
