ON SPEC SPECTACULAR

In 2013 I was approached by a representative of the Fitzroy Street Business Association to create a style guide for the redevelopment of the Luna Park and Palais Theatre site, a large triangle of land bordered by The Upper Esplanade, Jacka Boulevard and Shakespeare Grove.

SUMMARY

* Rejuvenate the classic Luna Park, rebuilding vintage attractions like the Giggle Palace, the Big Dipper and the River Caves.

* The River Caves ride incorporates the new Mount Vesuvius restaurant at the southern corner of the scenic railway, with a lookout overlooking the bay.

* Establish a Japanese Restaurant, Garden and Pond in the park at the junction of Cavell Street and Shakespeare Grove.

* Rejuvenate the Palais Theatre, adding an outdoor venue on the western wall, built over an underground car park (access by Cavell St.)

* A new architect designed prestige hotel behind the Palais Theatre, facing south west, with seaside views toward Melbourne and down to Frankston.

* A student hostel for young travellers, built of recycled shipping containers along Shakespeare Grv.

* A contemporary amusement park at the north west corner of the triangle.

* Multi-cultural food vendors market along both footpaths on Cavell St.

* A new hothouse dome for the Veg Out Garden on Shakespeare Grv.
